GEARED UP GARAGE Birthday or Father’s Day creation

I’m fixated with masculine cards…namely because I sell my cards at a local boutique “La Bona International Boutique” here in Pensacola, FL. So I like to ensure the shop is stocked with the upcoming holiday..like Father’s Day.

That said, my brother’s birthday is coming up as well. I’m always on the search for the perfect products to create a unique card. Being the “renaissance” man he is (you may know one) he is a carpenter, fisherman, stalker of elk, deer and antelope but last but not least a mechanic “extrodinare”!

He is the brother you would go to if something didn’t “sound right” with your car when we all away at college. Sometimes he would come into our cramped college apartment (my brothers and I shared) carrying an oily car rag to ask our other brother, Pat – for help downstairs (incidentally, my late brother Pat worked at a garage part-time in college). I hated the odor waifing through our small college apartment as each slipped into oily overalls before leaving. Throwing open the windows, I would yell down to parking lot…”…don’t come back in here with those oily rags…”. They would look up at me. Look at each other and just shrug. In Pat’s case, those oily rags helped pay for books!

I also remember when, while we where home from college for the summer, Bryan asked if I would sit in the Toyota Land Cruise my father sold him, while he lined up some “gears” as he installed a clutch. Again, that odor as I sat, clutched and shifted through each successive gear…first, second, third….reverse. I couldn’t wait to be released from my “good deed”; silently cursing Pat who was off playing tennis.

Today that same Toyota sits in my brother’s garage in wait his for son…….totally road worthy, totally restored and every inch a classic. I can’t help but take a deep breath when I’m in there……because any whiff of an oily garage rag…sings of memories.
