Here is a quick & easy card — less than 20 minutes!
But first, let’s explore color using a COLOR WHEEL and understanding a little about color theory. The whole purpose of understanding a COLORWHEEL and color theory is that it allows us to understand the relationship of colors and how to pick colors that provide the best harmony. When you are confident in color selection, you can use your background stamps to create beautiful color combinations.
I was inspired by the new Annual Catalog for May 2024-April 2025, and during ON STAGE where time was dedicated to understanding color theory and we were given our own color wheel as a tool for sharing the concepts of color harmony.
To demonstrate, I’ve taken the LEAF COLLECTION background stamp (available in the new catalog) and applied the Color Theory’s concepts using some familiar colors:
- Complementary – pairing colors that lie opposite on the color wheel.
- Analagous – pairing colors that lie side by side on the color wheel.
- Triadic – pairing colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel. Somewhat in line with how the primary colors (classic being red, blue, yellow) are arranged — but this technique can yield some interesting combinations you may of never considered!
- Monochromatic – One color using various shades and tints — this is best using a watercolor technique. My favorite application is to simply choose SU colors near in hue like the ones below.
- Neutrals – the perfect companions to almost any combination — another favorite because they are stunning togetherl
